Agatha christie ordeal by innocence12/29/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() The thing about Ordeal by Innocence as well is that pretty much every single character has both motive and oppurtunity so seeing someone else carry out the crime both makes sense and intriuges audiences.Īside from the killer which I will get into later, I think the biggest change from book to miniseries was the characters. Watching the miniseries knowing the killer was different made it feel like I was reading the book all over again and I loved it. The good thing about changing a Christie novel is that for long term fans who have already read the book or even seen the Marple or other versions and therefore know who the killer is, watching an adapted version where the killer is different means they get to work it out all over again. I mean just look at Killing Eve and The Perfectionists, they were changed massively from their source materials and ended up being great hits. Books are adapted into films and series all the time and I think sometimes changes are necessary. I knew going in that there were going to be some changes but still didn’t know what to expect- I however ended up loving the miniseries. The 2018 miniseries however changes a lot of plot points, the least of which is the identity of the killer. However when she learnt he was already married, Kirsten left Jacko to rot in jail. In these two versions the killer is revealed to be the family maid Kirsten, who Jacko had seduced into killing his mother. Whilst the book and Marple versions do have some differences as all adaptations do (namely adding Miss Marple into the story and adding an extra sibling) the overall story and the identity and motive of the killer is the same. Talking about adaptation I will mostly be comparing the original book and Marple version with the 2018 miniseries. Calgary’s arrival however is not met with the gratitude he expects because now there’s one question on everyone’s minds- If Jacko didn’t commit the murder, who did? But now arriving back to civilisation Calgary realises his importance and sets out to prove to the family that Jacko was in fact innocent. For the past two years Calgary has been away and hasn’t had access to any form on news so Jacko’s trial and death had completely missed him. ![]() The peace is disturbed however when a stranger turns up at the door. Now two years later the family have moved on and Leo is set to marry his former secretary Gwenda. Jacko later dies in prison (the cause of his death varies in each version). The police search and search for Jacko’s alibi but fall flat so come to the conclusion that he must have been lying and he is imprisoned. Jacko is instantly arrested however claims that he couldn’t have killed her because he had hitched a lift with a stranger and was in the car across the whole estimated murder period. The mystery kicks off when Rachel is murdered one night whilst in her study, Jacko is the prime suspect because of his somewhat deranged behaviour and the fact he was overheard threatening his mother when she refused to give him money. ![]() The basic plotline that is retained in each of the 3 versions follows the Argyle family– husband Leo and wife Rachel who adopts five (six in the Marple version) children- Mary, Mickey, Tina, Hester and Jacko after discovering that she couldn’t have children of her own. Reading and watching these 3 versions I have noticed the similarities and differences across each and wanted to do a review/discussion piece. In the last few weeks I have both read Agatha Christie’s Ordeal by Innocence as well as watching the 2018 miniseries and the 2007 version with includes Christie’s famous sleuth Miss Marple. ![]()
